So, of course you believe in ethical relativism, right? Doesn't everybody? Well, be careful! According to some, college kids these days just don't understand morality. You may not realize it but you could be in danger of taking your ethical relativism too far.

We all know Nazis were bad guys. I mean, ethical relativism or no ethical relativism, they're evil, right? Well, I don't know. If you're really a staunch advocate of relativism, I think you're sort of in a bind.

It would seem that you have two options. Number one is that there are these basic, immutable laws but some cultures just don't quite get them. So, in your cultured enlightenment, you have to show some understanding towards individuals – because, in the end, they're just misguided.

Or, perhaps no culture's morality is any more valid or invalid than another's. Why are the immutable laws that you feel are correct any more likely to be true than someone else's?

Is the first of these two really ethical relativism? I don't think so. But I think it's what most people really believe – even as they cling to the banner of ethical relativism.

And where does this all leave the true relativist? What about those Nazis? I mean, it's wrong to commit mass genocide, right? Well, at least when you're using my set of immutable laws ...

Suddenly nothing seems to make sense.

So, something to think about. This continues on but it's all so heady – I believe a break is in order. In the mean time check out my new Unofficial Fetter Home Page.
